About the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation
The SCO has ten member states covering a contiguous landmass from Belarus to the Pacific — by area, the largest bloc mapped on this site. Six founding members (China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) constituted it in Shanghai in 2001, growing out of the 'Shanghai Five' border talks of the 1990s.
India and Pakistan joined together in 2017, Iran in 2023 and Belarus in 2024. Admitting India and Pakistan simultaneously was a deliberate balancing move, and it left the organisation containing three pairs of members with serious bilateral disputes — a fact that shapes what the SCO can actually agree on.
Afghanistan and Mongolia hold observer status and are shown in the second colour; Afghanistan's participation has been frozen since 2021. A further tier of fifteen dialogue partners, including Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the Gulf states, is not shaded here.

Using these maps
All four downloads are free for personal, classroom, academic and editorial use — a school project, a lecture slide, a blog post, a news graphic. Boundaries come from Natural Earth, which is public domain. The satellite, street and terrain versions are drawn over Esri basemap imagery, credited in the corner of each image; keep that credit visible when you reuse them.
Please keep the "September 2026" date on the map. Membership changes, and a membership map without a date is the single most common way an out-of-date roster ends up being republished as current.
