About the Mercosur
Mercosur has five full members. The four founders — Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay — signed the Treaty of Asunción in 1991, and Bolivia completed a long accession to become a full member in July 2024.
Venezuela, shown in the second colour, acceded in 2012 and was suspended indefinitely in August 2017 under the Ushuaia Protocol, the bloc's democratic-clause mechanism. The suspension removes all rights and obligations of membership without formally expelling the country, so it is neither a member nor a former member — which is exactly why it needs its own colour on this map.
The bloc is a customs union with a common external tariff, headquartered in Montevideo, and covers most of the population and economic output of South America. Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru are associate states with trade access but no membership, and are unshaded here. A trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union was concluded in December 2024 after twenty-five years of negotiation and remains in ratification.

Using these maps
All four downloads are free for personal, classroom, academic and editorial use — a school project, a lecture slide, a blog post, a news graphic. Boundaries come from Natural Earth, which is public domain. The satellite, street and terrain versions are drawn over Esri basemap imagery, credited in the corner of each image; keep that credit visible when you reuse them.
Please keep the "September 2026" date on the map. Membership changes, and a membership map without a date is the single most common way an out-of-date roster ends up being republished as current.
Questions about Mercosur membership
Which countries are in Mercosur?
Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia are full members. Venezuela is a suspended member.
When did Bolivia join Mercosur?
Bolivia became a full member in July 2024, completing an accession protocol first signed in 2015.
Why is Venezuela not shaded as a Mercosur member?
Its membership has been suspended since August 2017 under the Ushuaia Protocol. The suspension strips the rights and obligations of membership without expelling the country, so it is shown in a separate colour.
