What the United States map covers
The United States map on this page is drawn from 51 states and the District of Columbia, each one a separate clickable shape. By mapped area the largest is Alaska (about 1.5 million km², 16% of the country's mapped surface); the smallest is District of Columbia at about 160 km². The two differ by more than a thousandfold on the same map, so the small ones need a zoom before they are easy to hit. The mapped outline reaches from 19°N to 71°N and spans roughly 121° of longitude. The 51 states are made up of 169 separate landmass outlines, so much of the detail only appears once you zoom in. The United States straddles the 180th meridian, which splits it in half on a standard world map; this page centres it instead.

Tips for coloring the United States map
