About the OPEC
OPEC has 11 members. The roster has been shrinking: Qatar left in January 2019, Angola on 1 January 2024 after a dispute over its production quota, and the United Arab Emirates on 1 May 2026 — the largest producer ever to leave the organisation, after years of pressing for a quota matching its expanded capacity.
The second colour marks the five former members. Ecuador and Indonesia both left, rejoined and left again, Indonesia's second departure in 2016 coming once it had become a net oil importer. The organisation was founded in Baghdad in 1960 by Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, and has been headquartered in Vienna since 1965.
Note that OPEC and OPEC+ are different things and are often conflated. OPEC+ is a wider coordination arrangement including Russia, Kazakhstan, Mexico and others that are not OPEC members; this map shows OPEC membership only.

Using these maps
All four downloads are free for personal, classroom, academic and editorial use — a school project, a lecture slide, a blog post, a news graphic. Boundaries come from Natural Earth, which is public domain. The satellite, street and terrain versions are drawn over Esri basemap imagery, credited in the corner of each image; keep that credit visible when you reuse them.
Please keep the "September 2026" date on the map. Membership changes, and a membership map without a date is the single most common way an out-of-date roster ends up being republished as current.
Questions about OPEC membership
How many countries are in OPEC in 2026?
11, following the United Arab Emirates' withdrawal on 1 May 2026.
Why did the UAE leave OPEC?
It announced its exit on 28 April 2026, effective 1 May, after a review of its production policy and capacity. The dispute centred on its 3.5 million barrel-per-day quota, which it considered too low for the capacity it had built.
Is Russia in OPEC?
No. Russia is part of the wider OPEC+ coordination group but has never been an OPEC member, and is not shaded on this map.
