About the OECD

The OECD has 38 member countries. It grew out of the Organisation for European Economic Co-operation, which administered Marshall Plan aid, and was reconstituted in 1961 with the United States and Canada as founding members of the new body. Costa Rica, admitted in 2021, is the most recent member.

The second colour marks the eight countries in accession discussions: Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Peru and Romania since 2022, and Indonesia and Thailand since 2024. Accession is a long technical process — candidates are assessed against the organisation's standards across some two dozen committees — and opening talks carries no guarantee of a date.

The OECD produces much of the comparative statistical work that underpins economic policy debate, including PISA education rankings and the country-by-country tax reporting framework. Its members are often loosely described as 'the rich countries', but the roster is broader than that shorthand suggests, and several large high-income economies — Singapore and the Gulf states among them — are not members at all.

Using these maps

All four downloads are free for personal, classroom, academic and editorial use — a school project, a lecture slide, a blog post, a news graphic. Boundaries come from Natural Earth, which is public domain. The satellite, street and terrain versions are drawn over Esri basemap imagery, credited in the corner of each image; keep that credit visible when you reuse them.

Please keep the "September 2026" date on the map. Membership changes, and a membership map without a date is the single most common way an out-of-date roster ends up being republished as current.

How many countries are in the OECD?

38. Costa Rica was the most recent to join, in May 2021.

Which countries are joining the OECD next?

Eight are in accession discussions: Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Peru and Romania (opened 2022), and Indonesia and Thailand (opened 2024). No accession date has been set for any of them.

Is China in the OECD?

No. China is a Key Partner of the organisation, which allows structured participation in its work, but it is not a member and is not shaded here.
