About the Arab League

The League of Arab States has 22 members, spanning North Africa and the Middle East from the Atlantic coast of Morocco to the Arabian Sea. It was founded in Cairo in March 1945 by six states and is the oldest continuously functioning regional organisation in the Arab world; its headquarters have remained in Cairo except for a decade in Tunis after Egypt's suspension over the 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

Palestine is a full member, which is why this map shades the West Bank and Gaza. Syria's membership was suspended in November 2011 and restored in May 2023, returning the active roster to its full 22.

The map spreads across two continents, and the members include the Comoros and Djibouti, which are often left off Arab League maps by mistake. Both have been full members for decades — the Comoros since 1993, Djibouti since 1977 — and both are shaded here. The Comoros, being a small island state, appears as a marker.

Every map on this page shows the identical roster — only the base layer and the projection change. Pick whichever reads best for what you are making, and download it at 3200 pixels wide.

Shown as markers: Bahrain, Comoros. Rather than drop them from a membership map, each is drawn as a marker at its true position.

Using these maps

All four downloads are free for personal, classroom, academic and editorial use — a school project, a lecture slide, a blog post, a news graphic. Boundaries come from Natural Earth, which is public domain. The satellite, street and terrain versions are drawn over Esri basemap imagery, credited in the corner of each image; keep that credit visible when you reuse them.

Please keep the "September 2026" date on the map. Membership changes, and a membership map without a date is the single most common way an out-of-date roster ends up being republished as current.

Questions about Arab League membership

How many countries are in the Arab League?

22, including Palestine. Syria's membership was restored in May 2023 after a suspension of nearly twelve years.

Is Iran or Türkiye in the Arab League?

Neither. Both are majority-Muslim states in the region but neither is an Arab state, and neither is a member. They are unshaded on this map.

Is Palestine a member of the Arab League?

Yes, as a full member since 1976, which is why the West Bank and Gaza are shaded on this map.
