About the NATO

NATO has 32 members: 30 in Europe and two in North America. The map makes the alliance's defining geographic feature obvious — it is an ocean-spanning bloc, not a regional one, and the North Atlantic between Canada and Norway is as much a part of the treaty area as any land border.

The alliance was founded in 1949 by twelve states and is headquartered in Brussels. It grew through nine rounds of enlargement, the most consequential being the post-Cold War accession of former Warsaw Pact states between 1999 and 2004. The two most recent members joined in direct response to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine: Finland in April 2023 and Sweden in March 2024, ending decades of formal non-alignment and adding roughly 1,300 km of new alliance border with Russia.

Article 5, the collective-defence clause under which an attack on one member is treated as an attack on all, has been invoked exactly once in the alliance's history — by the United States after the attacks of 11 September 2001.

Using these maps

All four downloads are free for personal, classroom, academic and editorial use — a school project, a lecture slide, a blog post, a news graphic. Boundaries come from Natural Earth, which is public domain. The satellite, street and terrain versions are drawn over Esri basemap imagery, credited in the corner of each image; keep that credit visible when you reuse them.

Please keep the "September 2026" date on the map. Membership changes, and a membership map without a date is the single most common way an out-of-date roster ends up being republished as current.

Questions about NATO membership

How many countries are in NATO in 2026?

32. Finland joined in April 2023 as the 31st member and Sweden in March 2024 as the 32nd. No further accession has completed since.

Is Ukraine in NATO?

No. Ukraine is a partner and an aspiring member, and NATO has stated its future lies in the alliance, but it holds no membership and no Article 5 guarantee. It is not shaded on this map.

Which NATO members are not in the European Union?

Albania, Canada, Iceland, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and the United States — nine of the 32. Comparing this map with the EU map on this site shows the overlap directly.
