About the Eurozone
Twenty-one of the European Union's 27 member states use the euro. Bulgaria is the newest, having adopted the currency on 1 January 2026 at a fixed rate of 1.95583 lev to the euro — the first enlargement of the euro area since Croatia in 2023.
The second colour shows the six EU members that keep their own currency: Czechia, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Sweden. Only Denmark holds a formal opt-out. The others are treaty-bound to adopt the euro eventually, but the timing is theirs, and several have shown no urgency about meeting the convergence criteria that would start the clock.
A handful of European microstates — Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City — use the euro under monetary agreements with the EU, and Kosovo and Montenegro use it unilaterally, without any agreement at all. None of them sits on the ECB's Governing Council, so none is shaded as a member here.

Using these maps
All four downloads are free for personal, classroom, academic and editorial use — a school project, a lecture slide, a blog post, a news graphic. Boundaries come from Natural Earth, which is public domain. The satellite, street and terrain versions are drawn over Esri basemap imagery, credited in the corner of each image; keep that credit visible when you reuse them.
Please keep the "September 2026" date on the map. Membership changes, and a membership map without a date is the single most common way an out-of-date roster ends up being republished as current.

How many countries use the euro in 2026?
21 EU member states are formally in the euro area, following Bulgaria's accession on 1 January 2026.
Which EU countries do not use the euro?
Czechia, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Sweden. Denmark negotiated a permanent opt-out; the rest are expected to join once they meet the convergence criteria.
Do Monaco and Andorra count as eurozone members?
No. They use the euro under monetary agreements with the EU and may mint their own coins, but they are not EU members and have no say in monetary policy, so they are not shaded here.
