About the G7
The G7 is the smallest of the major intergovernmental groupings mapped on this site: seven countries, four of them European. It began in 1975 as a six-nation response to the oil shock and the collapse of the Bretton Woods system, with Canada added in 1976.
The European Union attends every summit as a 'non-enumerated' participant, represented by the presidents of the European Council and the Commission. It has all the privileges of membership except the right to hold the rotating presidency, which is why the group is seven rather than eight — and why the map shades seven countries even though eight parties sit at the table.
Russia joined in 1997, making the group the G8, and was suspended in March 2014 following the annexation of Crimea; it formally withdrew in 2017. The G7 has no charter, no secretariat and no treaty — the presidency rotates annually and its communiqués bind nobody, which is precisely what its members find useful about it.

Using these maps
All four downloads are free for personal, classroom, academic and editorial use — a school project, a lecture slide, a blog post, a news graphic. Boundaries come from Natural Earth, which is public domain. The satellite, street and terrain versions are drawn over Esri basemap imagery, credited in the corner of each image; keep that credit visible when you reuse them.
Please keep the "September 2026" date on the map. Membership changes, and a membership map without a date is the single most common way an out-of-date roster ends up being republished as current.
Questions about G7 membership
Which countries are in the G7?
Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. The European Union also participates but is not counted as a member.
Why was Russia removed from the G8?
Russia's participation was suspended in March 2014 after the annexation of Crimea, and it announced its permanent withdrawal in 2017. The group reverted to the G7.
What is the difference between the G7 and the G20?
The G7 is seven advanced economies coordinating informally; the G20 is a far broader forum of 19 countries plus the EU and the African Union, covering most of the world's population. This site maps both.
