About the ASEAN
ASEAN has 11 member states following the admission of Timor-Leste at the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur on 26 October 2025 — the bloc's first enlargement since Cambodia joined in 1999, and the end of a process Timor-Leste began with a formal application in 2011.
The association was founded in Bangkok in 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, with a secretariat in Jakarta. Brunei joined in 1984, Vietnam in 1995, Laos and Myanmar in 1997 and Cambodia in 1999.
Singapore appears on this map as a marker rather than a shaded country. At the resolution used for world maps its land area — under 750 km² — is smaller than a single pixel, so shading it would be invisible. The marker is placed at its actual coordinates. Papua New Guinea, an observer since 1976, and Myanmar, a member whose political representation has been restricted at summits since the 2021 coup, are handled differently: the first is unshaded, the second is a full member and is shaded as one.

Using these maps
All four downloads are free for personal, classroom, academic and editorial use — a school project, a lecture slide, a blog post, a news graphic. Boundaries come from Natural Earth, which is public domain. The satellite, street and terrain versions are drawn over Esri basemap imagery, credited in the corner of each image; keep that credit visible when you reuse them.
Please keep the "September 2026" date on the map. Membership changes, and a membership map without a date is the single most common way an out-of-date roster ends up being republished as current.

Why is Singapore shown as a dot on this map?
Singapore's land area is too small to register as a shaded polygon at world-map scale. It is drawn as a labelled marker at its true position so it is not lost from the membership picture.
