About the Commonwealth of Nations
The Commonwealth has 56 member countries across every inhabited continent, together home to around 2.7 billion people — a little under a third of humanity, with more than half of that in India alone. It is the most geographically scattered of the organisations mapped here, which is why the marker layer matters: a great many members are small island states that cannot be shaded at world scale.
Most members are former territories of the British Empire, but that is no longer a requirement. Mozambique joined in 1995 with no such history, followed by Rwanda in 2009 and Gabon and Togo in 2022. Membership is voluntary and reversible: Zimbabwe withdrew in 2003, the Maldives left in 2016 and rejoined in 2020.
The association is a free one, with no treaty obligations and no defence commitments. King Charles III is Head of the Commonwealth, a symbolic role that is not hereditary and was confirmed for him by the members in 2018; he is separately head of state in 14 members besides the United Kingdom. The other 41 are republics or have their own monarchs — a distinction the map cannot show, but which explains why 'Commonwealth realm' and 'Commonwealth member' are different lists.

Shown as markers: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Kiribati, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Nauru, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Seychelles, Singapore, Tonga, Tuvalu. The boundary data behind these maps is Natural Earth's 1:110m world geometry, which carries no polygon for states this small — at world scale they are smaller than a single pixel. Rather than drop them from a membership map, each is drawn as a marker at its true position.

Using these maps
All four downloads are free for personal, classroom, academic and editorial use — a school project, a lecture slide, a blog post, a news graphic. Boundaries come from Natural Earth, which is public domain. The satellite, street and terrain versions are drawn over Esri basemap imagery, credited in the corner of each image; keep that credit visible when you reuse them.
Please keep the "September 2026" date on the map. Membership changes, and a membership map without a date is the single most common way an out-of-date roster ends up being republished as current.
Questions about Commonwealth membership
How many countries are in the Commonwealth?
56 as of September 2026. Gabon and Togo were the most recent to join, both in June 2022.
Do all Commonwealth countries have King Charles as head of state?
No. He is Head of the Commonwealth, a symbolic role covering all 56, but head of state in only 15 of them. The rest are republics or have their own monarchies.
Which countries have left the Commonwealth?
Ireland (1949), Zimbabwe (2003) and the Maldives (2016) all left; the Maldives rejoined in 2020. Members may withdraw at any time, and none of the departures required a vote.
