About the Schengen Area
The Schengen Area covers 29 countries that have abolished systematic checks at their shared borders. Twenty-five are EU member states; Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland take part without being in the Union. Bulgaria and Romania were the most recent to join, becoming full members for air and sea travel in March 2024 and for land borders on 1 January 2025.
Two EU countries sit outside the zone and are shown in the second colour. Ireland maintains its own Common Travel Area with the United Kingdom and holds an opt-out. Cyprus is legally committed to joining but has not yet done so.
For travellers, the zone functions as a single jurisdiction: a Schengen visa issued by any member is valid throughout, and the 90-days-in-any-180 short-stay limit is counted across the whole area rather than per country. That is the single most common misreading of this map — 90 days in France followed by 90 days in Spain is not permitted.

Using these maps
All four downloads are free for personal, classroom, academic and editorial use — a school project, a lecture slide, a blog post, a news graphic. Boundaries come from Natural Earth, which is public domain. The satellite, street and terrain versions are drawn over Esri basemap imagery, credited in the corner of each image; keep that credit visible when you reuse them.
Please keep the "September 2026" date on the map. Membership changes, and a membership map without a date is the single most common way an out-of-date roster ends up being republished as current.
Questions about Schengen membership
How many countries are in the Schengen Area?
29 as of September 2026. Bulgaria and Romania completed their accession with the lifting of land-border checks on 1 January 2025.
Is Ireland in the Schengen Area?
No. Ireland is an EU member but keeps border checks and operates the Common Travel Area with the United Kingdom instead. It is shown in the secondary colour here.
Are Norway and Switzerland in Schengen?
Yes, both are full Schengen members through association agreements, along with Iceland and Liechtenstein, despite none of the four being in the EU.
